1/2/2007 China Day 99: Hong Kong - Lazy Hazy Day

Still recovering from my hiking trip on Lantau Island, the foggy weather in Hong Kong today dissuaded me from going to the beach to relax. Instead, I just stayed in the Kowloon district where my hostel is and got a massage (180 HKD). 180 HKD is actually expensive for a 1 hour massage in Hong Kong - there are innumerable touts in the tourist areas offering massages for 99 HKD, but I went to the more expensive place because it came recommended by a yoga instructor.

A yoga instructor I met over lunch. I figured trying a recommended masseuse was better than trying a random one. The yoga instructor was ethnically Chinese but born (I think) and bred in New Zealand. Studied Bikram yoga in Los Angeles, was offered a job in Hong Kong out of the blue, and accepted!

The masseuse she recommended was OK. A little better than average. Which is to say that sometimes the massage was soothing, but sometimes it was painful. My calves were still so sore and tight from hiking that the masseuse could barely touch them without inflicting a squirming pain in me. Unfortunately, she decided not only to knead them softly, but also to step on them.

Next time I'll try the cheap massage.
